Trains depart near the railway station of Martel, in the outskirts of the town on the Lot "département"(46). The Martello canton, located on the borders of the old provinces of Quercy, Périgord and Limousin and of two departments, Lot and Corrèze, appears as the most septentrional canton of Midi-Pyrénnées and the door of Midi arriving from the North. An old capital of the Turenne Viscounty, Martel still has its medieval look. Since the XII and XIV century the town has kept its profile with 7 towers, its elegant monuments, its narrow streets and the old houses with pointed arcs. |
Martel is built on a calcareous plateau cut on the South by the valley of the Dordogne river (the Hope river). The climate is relaxing, sunny and refreshing, as typical of the calcareous areas of the region (the "Causses"). The gastronomy is famous, with traditional productions like the black truffle, walnut, "foie gras", "cabecou" (small goat cheeses) from Rocamadour and the lamb of Quercy |
